Five Outerwear Trends for Spring

Before you know it, it will be too warm for parkas but too cool for hoodies. So we took to the chic streets of "Le 11201" (as we call our Brooklyn arrondissement) for some transitional dressing inspo.

Trend No. 1: Camel Coats

The camel coat is an instant upgrade to any outfit. The neutral color goes with everything, and it adds Parisian polish to jeans or a skirt and leggings.

Trend No. 2: Rain Gear

Rain jackets and anoraks have gone from purely functional to the unexpected statement coat of the season. Your kids will get a lot of mileage out of these rugged pieces: They can be layered over sweatshirts or fleeces when it is cold and worn solo through summer.

Trend No. 3: Bold Graphics

As our editor's 9-year-old once said, "You know what goes with leopard, Daddy? MORE LEOPARD!" We agree, particularly if you have a maximalist on your hands. Sequins, prints and pops of colorful fur are all documented mood enhancers for the walk to school.

Trend No. 4: Lightweight Puffers

Puffer coats are no longer just for winter; a lot of minis we know would wear one every day if they could. This spring's crop of lightweight options run the gamut from primary to metalic colors, and they can be easily stuffed into knapsacks if the day turns warm.

Trend No. 5: Retro Windbreakers

The graphic colors and geometric shapes that were big in the 80s are back. The loose fits mean you'll get two seasons of wear. Plus, this is your chance to explain how much Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys meant to you back in the day.
