A canvas shoe holds water. Mesh lets it straight through, which is the whole reason these are built the way they are.

Play Shoes in Sand are children's water shoes from GRECH & CO., made with a mesh upper and a TPR rubber sole. They go on at the shoreline and stay on for the walk back, and when a day has been a lot they take an occasional machine wash and air dry. The size run goes from 22 to 35, wide enough that a younger child often has a pair waiting once an older one has moved up ~ in the same color, so nothing needs matching again from scratch.
