Originally named 'Laelaps' in 1866 by E. D. Cope, Dryptosaurus was one of the first theropods ever described. It was renamed Dryptosaurus’ by Cope's rival, O. C. Marsh, in 1877. Known for its unusually long arms and hands, Dryptosaurus had 20 cm (8 in) long finger claws, similar to an eagle's talons.
